So you MAY or may not have read the email/Facebook link being passed around about the “We almost Died at MovieTowne POS.” incident. This Incident I have been led to believe is true and has been confirmed by SOME people, but then until ACTUAL evidence surfaces I will intend to just observe from the sidelines. What IS clear however is that one needs to still be vigilant when going outdoors esp to places with large amounts of people AS well as when going back to your car in lonely areas. But I digress.
The REAL reason for this post is to show you why its IMPORTANT as a brand to secure your online presence QUICKLY. Go do a search for “MovieTowne” on Facebook. Go on, I’ll wait. Look at what comes up. Then come back here.
Interesting isn’t it? Did you click the search result: “MovieTowne Needs better Security?” Notice the User Name in the URL: http://www.facebook.com/MovieTowne
You get where I’m going with this right? Its OBVIOUS that MovieTowne not thinking that they “Need to be on Facebook” never even thought that someone would USE their OWN username to protest against them. It happened to BP America after the Gulf disaster, a twitter account believed to be an OFFICIAL account of BP was in fact set up by people wishing to speak out against the companies handling of the situation. Thousands followed them and BP couldn’t get into there quickly enough. They just weren’t prepared!
Movietowne as well as a LOT of big companies in T&T aren’t prepared for a Social Media Meltdown. So far Derek Chin has responded in the media by saying he’s going to do the best he can to make MovieTowne Port of Spain safe again, this is mainly because online the voice is louder than outside. Patrons still continue to go to MovieTowne and will with the next big premiere, but online, they can quickly destroy your brand and the long term harm will be a disaster.
Now Movietowne’s in a bad long term position, they have to petition Facebook to get back their username should they wish to start a Facebook Page. (Legitimately) for their overall brand. And you can be sure that whenever you search for MovieTowne, “MovieTowne Needs better Security” will ALWAYS be on the top of the list and the more fans that like that page, the higher the rank it will become.*
Mr Chin has a LOT more to worry about than just non functionaing camera’s if he doesn’t work on his online presence, he will be defending the front gate while the barbarians are tunneling under the battlements.
